A man who was caught carrying a lock wrapped in a sock at the West Fourth Street subway station told police he had the weapon because "this is New York," the NYPD said. Police originally stopped William James, 32, for selling MetroCard swipes to two officers at the subway station at Sixth Avenue and West Fourth Street at about 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 21. He offered the officers three swipes for $5, which is below face value, and after he accepted the cash, the officers arrested him, police said.

The company controlled by the Big Apple restaurateur increased the range that shares will be priced to $17-to-$19 per share from $14-to-$16 - a move that now values the 63-unit business at up to $674.5 million, according to a regulatory filing on Wednesday. The steeper price points mean Shake Shack will raise as much as $95 million from the IPO - up from $80 million.

Two people were killed after a shooting in a Home Depot store in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood on Sunday afternoon in what appears to be a murder-suicide, two New York Police Department spokesmen said. One male individual, who preliminary NYPD investigations suggest was the shooter, was declared dead at the scene, Detective James Duffy said.
