As word spread that Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver had been arrested on corruption charges Thursday morning , many of his Lower Manhattan constituents were dismayed, saying they feared they had lost one of the community's greatest advocates. A New York man accused of directing an associate to conduct surveillance of the New York Stock Exchange at the behest of an al Qaeda operative was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Tuesday in New York federal court. Wesam El-Hanafi, 39, was arrested in April 2010 along with the associate, Sabirhan Hasanoff, a dual U.S.-Australian citizen.

She also co-wrote and starred in a terrible movie comedy called He's Way More Famous Than You, for which she's earned forgiveness. She's still a writer with a lot of promise who is obviously ready for bigger acceptance and louder applause.

Hip-hop heavyweights Run-DMC paid tribute to their late band-mate Jason Mizell as they played their first UK gig together in over 12 years. DJ Mizell, 37, known as Jam Master Jay, was murdered in Queens, New York, in October 2002.

Rabbi Ephraim Karp, director of spiritual living at Menorah Park Center for Senior Living in Beachwood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, was arrested in New York Jan. 15 on an active felony warrant from Maryland. According to the Queens, N.Y., district attorney's office, Karp has been charged by the state of Maryland with perverted practice, sex offense, sex abuse of a minor and sex abuse.
