If my childhood food memories have a homeland, it's New York City, with its array of readily available, American-style, Eastern European Jewish foods. On a recent trip to that mecca of bagels, knishes and hot pastrami, I visited the Lower East Side, a Manhattan neighborhood once closely identified with Jewish immigrants and later other migrs.

Two people were killed after a shooting in a Home Depot store in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood on Sunday afternoon in what appears to be a murder-suicide, two New York Police Department spokesmen said. One male individual, who preliminary NYPD investigations suggest was the shooter, was declared dead at the scene, Detective James Duffy said.

A man who was caught carrying a lock wrapped in a sock at the West Fourth Street subway station told police he had the weapon because "this is New York," the NYPD said. Police originally stopped William James, 32, for selling MetroCard swipes to two officers at the subway station at Sixth Avenue and West Fourth Street at about 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 21. He offered the officers three swipes for $5, which is below face value, and after he accepted the cash, the officers arrested him, police said.

A huge snowstorm slammed into northeastern U.S. late Monday, shutting down public transport, canceling thousands of flights and leaving roads and streets deserted as snow blanketed an area that's home to tens of millions of people. Authorities ordered drivers off the streets in New York and other cities like Boston in the face of a storm that forecasters warned could reach historic proportions, dumping up to three feet of snow in some areas.
